Workshop with Jamie Preisz
Still Life in Oils
Still Life in Oils
A six-hour still life workshop taught by artist Jamie Preisz — a fantastic introduction to get over the fear of working with oils.
Fee includes all art materials, and a delicious healthy lunch from local gourmet wizz Lucinda's Pantry.
Working from life, students will create a still life composition on a canvas panel, choosing from objects such as pears, flowers, and animal skulls.
This class is for you if you want to:
- Learn the basics of still life composition, understanding how to select objects and arrange elements within your artwork to create balance, interest, and visual impact.
- Gain an understanding of fundamental oil painting techniques such as blending, layering, and brushwork.
- Learn how to mix and blend colours using a limited palette to create a harmonious cohesive palette for your artwork.
- Learn how to create a still life painting from start to finish, including mapping it out, painting, and an understanding of the finishing process.
This workshop provides beginners with hands-on experience and confidence in handling oil painting materials, including paints, mediums, and brushes.
Intermediate and more advanced levels are also catered for by the choice of more challenging objects to paint.
Jamie Preisz works across painting, drawing and film making. He is known for his still life and portraits where he uses classical methods of oil painting in contemporary contexts.
Selected exhibitions include a 2014 solo in Paris, Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art in 2016, the Archibald Prize 2018, and Sydney Contemporary in 2019. Jamie won the Archibald's Packing Room Prize in 2018 with a portrait of Jimmy Barnes, and the Brisbane Portrait Prize People's Choice in 2021. He was a finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Mosman Art Prize, Hawksbury Prize, Waverley Art Prize, and many more.
Born in 1990, Jamie currently lives in Sydney where he works from his Annandale studio.
This class uses oil paints. All art materials are included in the class fee, for your convenience.
