Tonalism

A six-hour oils workshop taught by artist Haydn Wilson. Hot on the heels of his exhibition opening at Spud Lane Gallery on 3rd August, Hadyn is coming back the following day to teach beginners and beyond the fundamentals of loose tonalism. Participants will work on two paintings during the day - one still life and one interior.

Fee includes all art materials, and a mouth-watering lunch from local gourmet whiz Lucinda's Pantry.

Class Details

Australian Tonalism (or tonal realism) goes back to early 20th century Melbourne when Max Meldrum started the movement, before being joined by Clarice Beckett and others. Typically works use a limited palette and are characterised by a misty or atmospheric quality.

In this small group class, working in oil paint and from life, students will learn the fundamentals of loose tonalism with our exhibiting artist Hadyn Wilson.

This class is for you if you want to:

  • Learn how to recognise colour temperature and mix colours to achieve the subtle gradations characteristic of Australian Tonalism.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of how the arrangement and interaction of elements within the two-dimensional surface of an artwork contribute to a harmonious and engaging composition that works from a pictorial viewpoint.
  • Develop observational skills in looking at light and how it interacts with a scene.
  • Explore brushwork techniques to draw and paint that emphasize tonal variation over detailed linework.
  • Develop an understanding of tonal values and how to apply them effectively in creating depth, mood, and atmosphere in your work.

Participants will work on two paintings during this practical studio workshop - a simple still life in the morning, and a studio interior after lunch, providing the opportunity to practice your new skills in different settings.

Hadyn is an experienced teacher and a practicing artist who combines whole class teaching and demonstration with personalised guidance and feedback.

Suitable for beginners to advanced artists.
