Spud Lane Studios & Gallery has quickly become known as a go-to destination on the Southern Highlands Gallery circuit.

Why? It’s the only venue open to visitors where you can get a real insight into the practices of a working artist.

The 200+ square metre interior is the loving creation of artist Ric Abel, who has had this space for over ten years as the centre of his artistic journey.

Spud Lane Studios & Art Gallery, Robertson The main exhibition space downstairs.

The building we are housed within - Highlands Hive, was formerly a packing shed for one of Robertson's famous potato farms, but it is also known for housing the studios of a long list of luminary artists including Ben Quilty, Laura Jones, David Griggs, and local favourite Carlos Barrios.

Joining Ric five years ago, is his partner Cat Doyle, a newcomer to the art world who has embraced painting with gusto in her sunroom eyrie and whose works can now be found as part of the salon-style hang on the Spud Lane walls. Together they founded Spud Lane Studios in 2019 with a vision of it becoming a melting pot of art classes, exhibitions, working studio, and a hub for the local creative community.

'The Mezz' gallery space The Mezzanine Gallery has an intimate vibe.

Also within the exhibition space, which is split over two levels, you’ll find a changing curation of paintings including major works by 1984 Archibald winner and art world giant, Keith Looby who is known for his incredibly thick figurative oil paintings. Unlike the typical white cube gallery, Spud Lane has a quirky urban vibe reminiscent of New York, and a maximalist aesthetic that trembles with infinite warmth and welcome.

Works are for sale, with ArtMoney available to assist collectors to acquire those dream pieces that punctuate a collection.
